Paul Melo e Castro
Paul Melo e Castro lectures in Portuguese and Comparative Literature at the University of Glasgow. He has research and teaching interests in literature, film and photography with a focus on issues relation to space, everyday life and postcolonial cultural production. His research has touched on the colonial press as a vehicle for the short story and photojournalism in Goa and Mozambique, with a particular interest in the last generation of Portuguese-language Goan short-story writers (such as Maria Elsa da Rocha, Epitácio Pais and Augusto do Rosário Rodrigues) and Mozambican photographers connected to the Tempo newsmagazine (such as Ricardo Rangel and Kok Nam). He is a regular literary translator, having worked on writers from all over the Lusophone world, and has translated many short stories that appeared in Goa’s colonial press. His latest project concerns the Goan journalist and short story writer José da Silva Coelho, who was a prolific writer of short stories, legends, prose poems and sundry journalistic pieces in the 1920s and 1930s.
