Congress Liberalism and the Colonial Press, 21-22 September 2022
The 2º IGSCP-PE International Liberalism and the Colonial Press was held in Lisbon on 21st and 22nd of September 2022, aimed at commemorating the bicentenaries of the first Portuguese Constitution, of the Independence of Brazil and of the birth of periodical press in the Portuguese colonies.
Promoted by GIEIPC-IP and the ORION Project - Portuguese Orientalism, it was organised by CHAM - Centre for Humanities, NOVA-FCSH and CEComp - Centre for Comparative Studies, FLUL, with partners including BNP - National Library of Portugal, BNAngola - National Library of Angola, BNM - National Library of Mozambique, AHM - Historical Archive of Mozambique, Eduardo Mondlane University, IANCV - National Archives Institute of Cape Verde, HML - Municipal Newspaper Library of Lisbon, FMSMB - Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation, CD25A - 25 April Documentation Centre, University of Coimbra, and the Pensando Goa project.
With communications mainly focused on the Constitutional Monarchy and the First Republic, the congress also welcomed several online exhibitions: 180 Years of the National Press, by the Cape Verde National Archives Institute (IANCV); Newspapers in the Custody of the Historical Archives of Mozambique (AHM). 1893-1975, by Alexandrina Buque and Simão Jaime, researchers at that Archive; and Studies on the Colonial Press, by members of GIEIPC-IP. Thanks to the National Library of Portugal, the Common Virtual Expo was added by the Gazeta de Goa (1821-1826).
It was also organized an exhibition on the colonial press (FLUL, 21 September-21 October 2022) in partnership with the FLUL Library. This physical exhibition shared sources and studies, many of which are difficult to access or mostly unknown, reflecting the diversity of perspectives mobilised by the colonial press, in this specific case related to the Portuguese empire. As a contribution to the intellectual history of this press, the following guide explains the history of the collections featured in this collaborative exhibition, as well as of the periodicals and intellectuals who brought them to life.
