Colloquium 50 Anos de Dipanda: a Imprensa Africana e a Democracia (50 years of Dipanda: the African Press and the Democracy)

The National Library of Angola in partnership with the IGSCP-PE, has organized the multidisciplinary International Colloquium 50 anos de Dipanda: a Imprensa Africana e a Democracia, 28-29 May 2025, at the National Library of Angola.

The event aimed to foster debate and research on the history of the Angolan press and the Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP), exploring its cultural and political dimensions, as well as the role of the press in the intellectual construction of nations and their interactions with broader intellectual networks. Aimed at students, researchers in the social sciences and humanities (history, linguistics, literature, journalism, sociology and related areas) and the general public, the colloquium promoted multidisciplinary dialogue and was held in a hybrid format (in person and online). The programme included papers by Angolan and international researchers in various thematic panels. It also featured a round table of journalists and scholars on Angolan journalism, Post-independence journalism in Angola: trajectories, experiences and challenges.
As part of the initiative, the IGSCP-IP Workshop, Studies of the Colonial Periodical Press - Common Challenges and Local Dynamics, was held on the 30 of May at the Faculty of Humanities of Agostinho Neto University.
Finally, the occasion also enabled a fruitful exchange of ideas during visits to the National Archives of Angola, the National Library of Angola, the Municipal Library of Luanda, one of the oldest in Africa, and ISCED Luanda.
